This event is always held around Nov. 13th which is when Mollie Cardamone, Mayor of Sarasota and a former Lassie decreed it Lilly Kaighin Day. The regatta held in Lilly’s memory. The whole Lassie organization comes out and supports this event and many members of the Kaighin family attend and watch the races. The trophies are highly coveted by our pram and sunfish sailors. They are hand carved by one of Lilly’s sons. Awards are presented by Lilly’s family at a luncheon held after the race.
This award is voted on by the Captain and Fleet Captains and is given to the Lassie who demonstrates the most tenacity, perseverance, and determination in her quest to be a sailor. It is less about skill and more about having a positive attitude, showing an ability to laugh at oneself and being good natured in the face of setbacks. The Anchors Away Award symbolizes overcoming obstacles that weigh us down.
